Common battery myths
Cycles are not equal to lifetime
A common misconception is that a battery rated for 6000 cycles can last for 6000/365 = 16 years. If this were true, capacitors would act as infinite batteries with unlimited cycles – but unfortunately capacitors “dry out”. Similarly, a battery lifetime is a combination of both calendar aging and cyclic aging. As lithium is a highly reactive metal, the battery anode and cathode degrade through chemical reactions independent of a number of cycles. The titanium cell has a low nominal voltage combined with an extremely resilient SEI barrier layer that causes negligible calendar aging up to 30 years.
Battery depth-of-discharge (DoD)
Most batteries cannot use their entire capacity as this will seriously degrade their performance. Many manufacturers will specify an average use of 80% DoD, meaning that 20% of the battery is never utilized. However as a typical battery ages at close to 4% per year, this means that after 7 years, only 50% of a typical lithium battery will be usable. The SuperTitan battery does not compromise and offers true 100% depth-of-discharge cycling with less than 1% degradation per year.
Return of investment
Cheaper batteries do not automatically have a higher return of investment. There are some limitations to return on investment, including that it does not consider the holding period of an investment, is not adjusted for risk, and does not consider social or environmental goods. Since the lifetime and degradation of SuperTitan batteries are much better than competing technologies, the ROI is always high relative to the risk of taking a long-life storage system.
